It seems the studies have no end this month. According to yet another independent study by none other than the UK Gambling Commission, nearly 9% of adults said they participated in some form of remote gambling and online wagering over the course of the last year (from March 2007 to March 2008). Derived from a survey of 8,000 adults, the statistics suggest that gambling in Great Britain is on the rise.

To be even more accurate about online gambling activities, clarification is needed regarding lottery transactions. 6.3% of those surveyed say they purchased National Lottery tickets by remote means, which when weighed into the overall 9% figure, shows that approximately 5% of adults participate in remote gambling other than lottery.

As for internet betting at online casinos, sportsbooks, poker rooms, lottery portals and other internet specific betting sites, approximately 7% of those surveyed say they used a portable internet device, such as a personal computer of laptop, while 2.4% said they used their mobile phone (a promising sign for the online casino mobile sector), and less than 2% used a digital TV interface. Overall, the largest age group participating in remote wagering was between the ages of 18 and 34, while the guys recieved the nomination over the women (as if that was a surprise).

Just a taste for things to come, this study precedes the next large scale 2010 British Gambling Prevalence Study, which the UK Gambling Commission recently announced it is making plans to undertake (Perhaps that’s why the Commission’s current Director, Andrew Lyman, is calling it quits). As always, this study will be hugely anticipated by industry professionals seeking to gauge gambling market trends, especially in the online casino and mobile gambling sectors, for the years to come.
