Finnish Land Slots Company Goes to the Internet

The Finnish government has spent months now contemplating adding a Finnish online casinos gambling site as a way to bring revenue into the country since gamblers are currently using foreign internet gambling companies. Finland currently operates a land slots gambling monopoly – RAY (Raha-Automaattiyhdistys), and now it looks as though RAY could go online in mere months at this point. The country’s land gambling industry is lucrative, but like all nations, Finland must choose how close to bring internet gambling – something that often brings other headaches for national governments if not extensively regulated.

The online casino initiative is a definite consideration and would largely feature extensive video slots games – an area where the company already has some experience. RAY is currently the sole land gambling company able to operate slot machines in the country – the company also operates table games and other normal casino offerings.

But there are some issues with opening up the online casinos gambling industry. “We need to consider very carefully whether Internet distribution would unsettle the conditions for RAY’s independence and exclusive right to the extent that the risk is not worth taking,” comments the RAY’s Chairman of the Board of Administration, Jukka Vihriala.

There are currently issues with several European countries that have violated EU free-trade policies, and though Finland is not on the list of nations in violation, future online casino gambling policy would have to be very well thought out and specific to avoid complications with the European Commission.

Vihriala comments, “We are considering under what judicial, political, financial and ethical conditions Internet distribution would be possible.” With all of those considerations to take into account, the decision on whether RAY will move into the online gambling industry will be announced at the beginning of the second quarter.
