Most leagues cost nothing to join and nothing to play and the majority feature Texas Holdem exclusively. Typically, leagues have many venues throughout an area with additional venues coming on board all the time to ensure everybody has a place to play that is close to home.

Registration for these free leagues is typically a simple process and can be accomplished in minutes at the restaurant or tavern where the tournament is being held, or, in many instances, can be done on line at the league's website. Players seem to enjoy not only the game but also the social aspects of the evening. Player ages range from the early twenties to the mid eighties. Both males and females seem to enjoy participating and you'll find people from many walks of life including doctors, carpenters, teachers, insurance agents and almost any other occupation you can think of. Prizes for the evening are often gift certificates, vacations and entries into big time casino tournaments.

Most venues hold two tournaments each evening and generally start around 7:00 p.m. with a second tournament starting around 10:00 p.m. This gives people a chance to get home from work and get to the event.
